Our history

We are Débora and Jadal, an Italian couple who, in 2016, decided to move to Barcelona in search of a new way of life.

In 2018, that same impulse gave birth to a project that was initially called A.R.O. – Anathema Ride Out.
It began as something intimate, without big plans, carried out alongside our other jobs, but with one very clear need: to express an identity we couldn’t yet find in a way that truly resonated with us.

Black and avant-garde style entered our lives in 2013. It was something far from trends—and that’s exactly why it fascinated us more than anything else.

In Milan, we found avant-garde pieces that captivated us. But once in Barcelona, it became nearly impossible to find anything similar. And the few that existed were very expensive.
So Jadal started designing his first long tees, exactly the way he wanted them. Little by little, as a self-taught designer, he began to create what he couldn’t find—helped by a pattern maker and a seamstress.

After the tees came the first kimono and pants designs, and in 2022 we created our first real collection.
Thanks to that, in 2023 we were selected to take part in the city’s most important fashion program: Barcelona Fashion Forward.

That was a major turning point. The project took on a definitive shape, becoming Anathema, with a clear identity and a deep purpose: to represent the conscious, awakened human being—one who seeks to go beyond the surface.

This is how our motto was born: Conscious Avant-Garde, which is also the core concept behind the brand’s philosophy.
At last, we had the words to describe what we had been building for years: a radical and essential kind of fashion, created with awareness, ethical boundaries, and a spiritual vision of aesthetics.

Our main inspirations are Japanese aesthetics and science fiction.
Films like Star Wars and Matrix inspire us not only visually, but also for the messages they convey.
Star Wars, especially, with the figure of the Jedi, represents the image of a spiritual being living in a hyper-technological world—just like the one we inhabit today.
A human who knows themselves, without conflicting with the outer world.

This vision becomes a message, a purpose, and takes form in the garments we create for this type of person—someone we want to protect and elevate.

We work with natural, local fibers and deadstock fabrics sourced from European suppliers.
Each piece is produced in our Barcelona atelier, in limited editions, with full traceability and artisanal care.

Anathema was born from a deep place, from a vital need for self-expression.
Creating clothing has been—and continues to be—our way of giving meaning to our place in the world.

Still today, we design from that place: for those who feel that dressing is a ritual, a practice of connection with oneself.

Fashion as ritual
Presence as practice
Elevation as purpose
